Restroom Door Repaint
With a store opening only two months prior, I was called in to take care of peeling paint forming on the restroom doors.
This high traffic area was showing wear on the spots most touched by the guest. The cause was the use of latex paint. Great for protection on areas that don’t see high contact, but not the best for things such as doors, windows, or trim.
To correct, the doors were stripped back where the peeling was forming, followed by a sanding, and cleaning.
The failing areas were then spot primed with an alkyd enamel primer, followed by two coats of alkyd enamel paint on all sides of the door, along with the casing.
The alkyd enamel, while takes a longer time to dry than most water-based paints, provides an unbelievable durable finish. With a properly prepped surface and enamels ability to lay flat, can also provide a great finish when a high-end smooth finishes are required.

Before. Only being two months old since first applied, the latex paint is peeling and already looks dull from high use.

Before. Close up of the peeling paint. Due to the high traffic, the latex paint is peeling where the guest are most likely to touch. This being around the push point of entry, kick plate, and trim where customers will rub up against.

Sherwin Williams All Surface Enamel Alkyd Primer and Topcoat used for application.

Prep for the area. Along with dropclothes, stripping of the failing areas, sanding, and cleaning with a degreaser was used.

Finished. Two coats of Sherwin Williams All Surface Enamel Alkyd was applied. While the work was performed over night to allow as little interference from the application and dry time, additional time is required for a full cure. With a 2 hour touch time, and 8 hours til recoat, the work needed to be performed over multiple nights.
