This countertop has not seen any maintenance for over 10 years. From the high traffic this location experience, deep scratches, dents, and wearing has become evident.
Starting off with 80 grit sandpaper, the majority of the issues were sanded away.
The sanding was followed by 120, and then 150 grit sandpaper to give a smoother finish that still had a little more grit.
3 coats of oil-based semi-transparent polyurethane was then applied. This was used to give the countertop the best protection, as well as match the golden tones of the old finish. As oil ages, then color turns more gold. The coats required a 4 hour dry time. Because the location has to operate with the counter in use, this was accomplished over multiple nights. Additionally, each coat received a finer sanding between coats. With 220 grit before the 2nd coat. And 320 grit before the 3rd.
The veneer finish below the countertop had also received some damage.
This was resolved by fabricating and installing a piece of metal trim that matches the feel of other trim throughout the restaurant.
